A Small Store with a Big Heart

The Corner Store at Artman gives new meaning to “retail therapy”
In November of last year, a modest space once used for storage was transformed into The Corner Store at Artman, and this small shop is making a big difference. Not only is it stocked with essentials like toiletries and snacks, but it has also become a cherished part of the community where residents can connect, socialize, and volunteer.
A store with a purpose
Unlike traditional shops, the real purpose of The Corner Store is to benefit the social and community life at Artman, not make a profit. Staffed by volunteers and aided by donations from families, it was the brainchild of Madeleine Byrne, Artman’s Director of Community Life.
“We had volunteers who used to do a store on wheels once a week—they wheeled a cart of items around—but they retired,” Byrne explains. “And then residents told us they wanted to shop more. We thought they would enjoy having a little store, and they really do.”
“Everything is sold at cost,” says Byrne. “Once a week I’m at The Dollar Store getting things for The Corner Store. I try to change up the fun items based on events and holidays, and we carry bathroom products, candy, chips, door wreaths, cards, just little items that they might want. But it’s really a place for everyone to socialize and have fun.”
A gathering place where all are welcome
Every Tuesday and Thursday before the store opens, people eager to browse and chat gather outside. Staffed by volunteer residents, including Executive Director MaryAnn McLaughlin’s mother, Dolores, the store is a hub that brings residents, staff, and family members together.
“The Corner Store gives people the independence to shop and make their own choices,” says McLaughlin. “They can choose things for themselves instead of having their family shop for them. And if they have a big life event and need a wedding or birthday card, they can find what they want right here. They love it.”
For those with memory care needs, The Corner Store also provides a sense of autonomy and belonging. “When family members are visiting, they can bring their loved ones here and assist them with their shopping,” says McLaughlin. “Sometimes it’s challenging to take our memory care residents out into the community, so it’s special to have a space like this for them to enjoy.”
Every purchase comes with a smile
More than simply a spot to pick up a tube of toothpaste or chocolate bar, The Corner Store at Artman is a welcoming place where each purchase comes with a smile, and every friendly conversation builds a warmer, more connected community.
